How To Prepare For Verbal Ability And RCs

Verbal Ability & RC requires a good basic strength of the language and grasping power. Building your vocabulary, learning synonyms & antonyms and brushing up basics of grammar in the initial preparation is must.

Spend every day minimum 1 hour in reading.  If you are comfortable reading sports column in a newspaper but not international news, start reading international news. When you get comfortable with International news, expand your horizon.

In beginner’s stage you must read newspaper articles (The Hindu is good) and articles from a few Indian Magazines like India Today, Outlook etc. Economist, WSJ or Mint online websites; they have well composed articles. I am sure you are going to come across new words every day. While reading articles, try to keep in mind the sentence formations and the style of language used, this will help you in the later stages of getting into IIMs.

SOME KEY POINTS FOR VERBAL SECTION

First step: Build a reading habits –

you must be in a habit of heavy reading! Start with simple books. Don’t go for Indian authors as the writing style of most Indian fiction writers is very simple and is not the perfect match to get CAT reading started. From the newspaper, at this level, you should try reading simple articles on philosophy or spiritual readings like the “Speaking Tree” by Times of India. Monitor your progress.

Reading Style

Always read keeping in mind the Central idea or the main theme of a paragraph. This helps you map a passage at one go. Good trainers will further teach you ways to speed read after you have done months of good central idea based reading. Keep noting what you read and keep moving. Do not get slow by getting too much into why and how.

Focus more on the main topics

Focus mainly on Reading Comprehension, Para Jumbles, Summarization and Odd Man out. These topics cover almost all of 34 questions that come in CAT verbal.

Work through Verbal sectional and topic tests
